About the Team

Otolaryngologist and Founder

The Man Behind the Coat.

Dr. Kevin Smith was raised in Dallas, Texas where he played quarterback for the famed Dallas Carter Cowboys (featured in the movie “Carter High”) and won numerous academic and community awards. He attended the University of Michigan on a football scholarship where he majored in Biology. Dr. Smith is one of the few facial plastic surgeons who is board certified by both the American Board of Otolaryngology (ENT) and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. For nearly two decades, Dr. Smith has served as an Assistant Clinical Faculty Member in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He was appointed to the Texas Medical Board by then Governor George W. Bush and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Smith is the first Black American to have completed a residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He is also the first Black American to be selected and to complete the Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the McCollough Plastic Surgery Clinic in Alabama.

As a facial plastic surgeon, he has performed thousands of facial plastic surgeries. These include more than 3,500 facelift procedures, more than 3,000 eyelid surgeries, and hundreds of rhinoplasties.

At the same time, he developed a niche treating migraine headache patients with a little known cure which has become his passion. He has successfully treated many patients who have been diagnosed with a variety of migraines including cluster, hormonal and others. Dr. Smith found in more than 2,000 patients the migraine was caused by a deviated septum or bone spur in the nose. When properly diagnosed and removed with Dr. Smith’s migraine treatment technique his success rate is nearly 90%.

A deviated septum can be caused by injury to the nose and can be repaired in conjunction with a rhinoplasty. A septoplasty, which corrects a deviated septum not only helps with headaches but also improves breathing problems associated with allergies and sleep disorders.
His years of studying and researching the connection between deviated septum’s and migraine headaches led him to write his book, The Migraine Imposter.

The Man Behind the Suit.

When you first meet Dr. Smith, his fashion style will undoubtedly impress you. His fashionable style is well-documented when he was named as Houston’s “Best Dressed Man” by Esquire magazine and finished as runner-up in all of America.

Everything in its place – fashionably and cosmetically. The way he dresses and presents himself is integrated into the way he approaches each patient who steps into the Smith Center. Dr. Smith’s mission, from a facial plastic surgeon perspective, is to have you look your best, feel your best, and live your very best life.

Another aspect of this facial plastic surgeon’s success is his golf game. He is a member of the Nomads Golf Club, a very exclusive golf association. In 2004, he was selected to participate in CBS’s “Golf’s Ultimate Road Trip”, playing on a four-person team and traveling across the country playing at some of the nation’s most prestigious PGA golf courses. He also won a BMW tournament out of 1,500 competitors, allowing him to compete in the BMW World Cup in Sydney, Australia. Before he turned his athletic abilities toward the links, Dr. Smith was a football star at David W. Carter High School in Dallas and at the University of Michigan.

When Dr. Smith isn’t performing facial plastic surgery or competing on the greens, he is spending time with his wife and two daughters.

Team of Doctors

Dr. James Alan Cowthran.

Meet Dr. James Alan Cowthran, a native of Houston, Texas, who has a devoted passion for serving his community and changing lives through medicine. His academic journey to become a physician first began at Baylor University, where he graduated Cum Laude to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. Dr. Cowthran continued his education by earning his medical degree from the McGovern Medical School at University of Texas Health Science Center in 2016. While attending, he was first introduced to Otolaryngology, and discovered the opportunity to enrich the quality of life for all patients suffering with disorders of the head and neck. As a medical student, he became the recipient of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Diversity Endowment Grant, which helped minority students obtain relevant exposure and experience in specific medical subspecialties. After completing medical school, Dr. Cowthran was the first and only African American in his class to matriculate into the surgical subspeciality residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. His love for Otolaryngology also led him to conduct formal research at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, which was later presented at the internationally recognized Rhinoworld Conference. His profound research findings were presented to some of the most respected and renowned otolaryngologists worldwide and was published in multiple articles related to the nose and paranasal sinuses. More recently, Dr. Cowthran has focused his clinical interest in treating migraines and chronic headaches as they pertain to the nose and sinuses. Under the mentorship and guidance of Dr. Kevin Smith, he has received exclusive training to become the nation’s first Migraine Specialist at the Smith Sinus Migraine Institute in Houston, Texas. While Dr. Cowthran enjoys caring for patients, in his spare time, he also enjoys spending time with family, traveling, playing golf and volunteering for many charitable organizations.
